Former Beatle Paul McCartney gives the city of Chichester a name check on his latest album.

McCartney is more usually associated with East Sussex where he has long had a home.

But it’s the county town of West Sussex that gets the nod on his new CD, titled simply New, which was released on October 14.

On the album is the track On My Way To Work which includes the lyric “She came from Chichester To study history She had removed her clothes For the likes of me.”

It’s the latest addition to the city’s pop and rock heritage.

Paul Weller famously wrote Above The Clouds in the area. His late father had worked on the Chichester Observer.

Chichester’s best-known rock associations, however, are through the Rolling Stones. Guitarist Keith Richards has had a home in the Witterings since the mid-1960s, and it was at Chichester Crown Court that Richards and lead singer Mick Jagger were jailed in 1967 following the notorious Redlands drugs bust.
