MIDDLETON cricket coach Brian Towner has been recognised for outstanding services to grass-roots cricket by former West Indies player Michael Holding.

He presented Towner with a special coaching certificate during the fifth Ashes Test at The Kia Oval.

Towner was given the exclusive opportunity to attend the Test as part of the Sky Sports ECB coach education programme. Twelve coaches met with Holding, all of whom were being acknowledged by the programme’s Reward and Recognition scheme.

More than 100 coaches from across the country are being recognised during the 2013 season in a series of on-pitch presentations by cricket legends and the Sky Sports broadcasting team.

Towner has spent the past 14 years developing youth cricket in the Middleton area. He has encouraged more and more children to take up the game, last year starting what is now a highly successful girls’ squad and also developing a Colts squad of 70 young players.

Towner said the Sky Sports ECB Coach Education programme was ‘brilliant’ and added: “It’s open to a wide variety of people, provides quality coaching, and really energises and enthuses youngsters to play the game.”

Holding said: “This programme highlights the value of having good coaches at grass-roots level. The coaches should be proud of what they have achieved, their dedication is a great advert for the programme.”

The education programme aims to attract and train coaches at all levels of cricket in England and Wales, developing coaching skills from playground to test arena.

The Reward and Recognition scheme aims to identify those cricket coaches who go above and beyond the call of duty to help grass-roots cricket flourish.
