Sussex race is off, so athletes head for Hampshire, Surrey and Wiltshire

With winter weather forcing the cancellation of the Southwater Fun Run League race on Sunday, Chichester seniors had to look farther afield for their competition and came home with some great performances.

Star of the weekend was Martin Barwood, a relatively new member of the club, who ran a massive personal best by finishing runner-up in the Portsmouth Coastal Half Marathon in a field of more than 800 runners.

His time of 1hr 14min 02sec shows he is in fighting form for a spring marathon, having also shown good cross-country speed over the winter.

In the same race Justin Eggins was 95th in 1.35.23 followed by Andrew Moore in 110th in 1.36.59 and David Knight 205th in 1.42.25 while Jessica Daniel was just outside the two-hour mark in 503rd.

On the same day, Angela Carpenter travelled to the Bramley ten-miler in Surrey and was rewarded with another personal best of the season crossing the line in 1.03.35, making her first over-40, fourth female and a fine 22nd overall in the whole race.

On Saturday, three of the club’s cross-country stalwarts travelled to Salisbury for the final Hampshire League fixture of the season with James Baker finishing ninth place while Jane Harrop was 16th in the women’s race and fifth masters lady overall, while club chairman Tom Blaylock was 117th in the men’s race.

This Saturday (Feb 18) all age groups will be in action in the final Sussex League fixture at Lancing Manor with several of Chichester’s teams and individuals well placed to bring home end-of-season medals.
