JAMES DOYLE has had a year to remember at Goodwood – and he wasn’t far away from landing another feature race at the track on Tuesday.
Doyle rode Kingman to victory for owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and trainer John Gosden in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious.
More recently, he guided Ansgar to the win in the Group 3 Doom Bar Supreme Stakes at the August bank-holiday festival.
But he was out of luck as he went for another notable success in Tuesday’s EBFStallions.com Peter Willett Stakes on 13/8 favourite Good Contact.
Doyle was well in contention all the way but ended a length and three quarters behind David Probert on the Andrew Balding-trained Make It Up (11/4).
The afternoon card – staged in lovely late-summer sun on the Downs – began and ended with wins for the riders who have been in the best form at Goodwood this season.
William Buick, who was top jockey at Glorious, took the EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies’ Stakes on John Gosden’s 8/1 chance Timba, while Richard Hughes extended his lead at the top of the Goodwood riders’ table for 2014 when guiding 15/8 favourite Last Minute Lisa first home in the Goodwood Aviation & Flying School Handicap.
There were also wins for Soviet Courage, Johnny B Goode, Kashgar and Inciting Incident.
They race again at Goodwood on September 24.
