Andy Awford insisted there was no need for a mass inquest after Pompey suffered a 3-0 defeat at non-league Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

The Conference South outfit ended the Blues’ three-game unbeaten pre-season run with an impressive victory at Stonebridge Road.

Goals from Charlie Sheringham (2) and Billy Bricknell did the damage as Awford’s side upped their preparations ahead of their League Two opener against Exeter on August 9.

The Pompey boss admitted he was disappointed with the nature of the goals conceded.

But he said he would not go ‘overboard’ on his players in his post-match analysis.

‘The goals we conceded were disappointing but I’d rather it happened now than later,’ said Awford.

‘The game, again, was all about fitness levels for me.

‘I haven’t gone overboard when we’ve gone teams before this and I won’t go overboard because we have suffered a defeat.

‘It’s not always going to go our way, and on Saturday it didn’t.

‘Fair play to Ebbsfleet – they gave us some problems, which is what you play pre-season games for.

‘We can sort out what happened at the back.’

Awford added it was collective errors that led to all three Ebbsfleet goals.

‘It was a group thing,’ he said.

‘We’ve worked the lads really hard last week and they probably looked a little bit sluggish as the game went on.

‘But that’s no excuse – there have been errors and that’s something we’ve got to address to make sure it doesn’t happen again.’
