The Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League captains and secretaries knockouts took place at the Aldwick Royal British Legion. There were 14 players in each competition, but the line-up was short of all teams sending their team leaders.
The captains’ knockout saw none of the last eight champions compete, so a new champion was a certainty.
The first semi-final saw Ashley Clements (Old Barn) beat Roger Hackett (Wheatsheaf). The second saw Alex Norgett (Newtown A) too good for Hayley Gatford (Chi Snooker B).
Clements has been in two captains’ finals over the past eight years, but lost them both, while this was Norgett’s first attempt.
Norgett got off to a great start in leg one with a score of 140 but Clements followed that with a ton of his own. A few high scores from Norgett got him to the double first, but he struggled to finish the leg. Clements moved in and hit double 16 for the first leg.
The second leg saw Clements take the lead and keep it all the way to the double. With 67 left he hit treble 17 with the first dart, then single eight, but missed double four by a mile. Norgett had 95 left and with his first two darts hit treble 15 and treble ten, but missed the double ten with his last dart. Clements hit double four with his first dart to take the match and the Captains’ Cup.
The secretaries’ knockout’s first semi-final saw Ian Hackett (Wheatsheaf) lose to two-time former winner Steve Aizlewood (BRSA B).
The second semi had Dave Owens (POW Z) taking on Keith Robinson (Chi Snooker C). Great darts from both players saw it go to 1-1, but despite being in the lead in the last leg, Owens missed his doubles and let Robinson through.
The final started with a ton from Aizlewood, but Robinson caught up. With both players now leaving 47, Robinson hit single 19 and double 14 to take the first leg.
The second leg saw Robinson keep the lead all the way to the double and leave 32. Aizlewood was on 113, but with treble 20, single 13 and double top, he took it.
The last leg was even until Aizlewood scored 121. Robinson looked to the heavens for inspiration, but none came. Aizlewood finished the leg to take the Secretaries’ Cup title for the third time.
The start of the night brought the league’s annual meeting, which was overshadowed by the announcement that league chairman John West has, after 20 years on the league committee, decided to stand down with immediate effect. He will also stand down at the end of the current double-in double-out league in a few weeks.
Everyone was shocked by this news but amembers of both leagues have wished him well for the future.
Remaining Benevolent League committee members have organised an extraordinary meeting to take place at the Aldwick Royal British Legion on April 4. All teams in the Friday summer and winter leagues will be contacted, and are required to send at least one representative to the meeting by 8pm for an 8.30pm start.
A new league chairman will be voted in and the committee are also looking to gain new members. The rules will also be looked at, so anyone who would like to have their say should turn up and raise your hand.
