Meet the teenage basketball star who can help Bognor Pirates tower over their opponents this season.
Even in a sport dominated by larger-than-life characters, Luke Attfield stands out from the crowd – not surprising, really, because he is 7ft tall.
Stood next to the Pirates’ point guard Stu Hardyman, Attfield is out to show he has a head for the heights of the National League.
The Felpham youngster has forced his way into the Pirates’ first team after winning a silver medal playing for England.
Attfield clinched the prize as a member of the national team which took part in the under-16 men’s international championship in Macedonia. The England players made light of the sweltering conditions to sweep past the hosts 73-60 at the start of a seven-game unbeaten run.
They conquered Romania, Georgia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Israel on an unstoppable march to the final. But they fell just short in the final when they came up against Slovenia again and ended up on the wrong side of 73-82 scoreline.
Attfield has also played for Bognor Royals and has also qualified as a basketball referee.
