JAMES BAKER is never far from glory in the big races across the south - and true to form he won the Chi Half Marathon for the fourth year running, and with plenty to spare.

He came home in 1hr 11min 52sec - 32 seconds better than the course record he had set himself in 2013.

Afterwards he said he was proud of his run.

He told the Observer: “I’m really pleased to win it for the fourth year in a row. And to get the course record tops it off.

“I did feel everything was in place for me to get the record. I was gunning for sub-72 minutes and the conditions were good so I felt it was on.”

Baker led from the very start and said: “I left from the gun and after a while I was out of sight. I kept plugging away.

“I am happy being out on my own. I remain focused. I break it down into sections. Going downhill you can really attack it coming down off the Trundle down into West Dean to make up time lost going up the hill.

“I didn’t look back once. I knew I was away, so I didn’t need to look back!

“I was working it out - I was bang on 55 minutes at ten miles so I knew if I stuck to sub-5.20 miling and finished with a quick last mile, I’d do it.”

There’s no rest for Baker now - he has the gruelling Exmoor Slog up next in his running diary, before a host of cross-country races over the winter.

I’m really pleased to win it for the fourth year in a row. And to get the course record tops it off.
