Tennis star's reign in Spain not what she hoped for...

Felpham's Lisa Phillips travelled to Gran Canaria to further her experience on the international scene and to try to improve her doubles world ranking.

Phillips is currently world-ranked 952 and to have any chance of improving this she needs to win in the main draw of international events. Phillips is also working hard to try to get a world ranking in singles too.

With two pre-qualifying singles matches on the day after arrival and all her luggage lost, Phillips had little time to buy new kit and borrow a racket.

Phillips played reasonably well in the pre-qualifying matches, despite finding her borrowed racket too heavy, and preceded to the qualifying rounds.

She played two Spaniards in the qualifying rounds and battled hard to beat Ana Martinez Bencomo 6-2, 6-2 before being beaten by Maria Perez Mur 6-2, 6-3.

In the main draw of the doubles, Phillips partnered Diana Maria Mihail of Romania against Italian Elena De Santis and Camille Sireix of France.

Phillips and her partner were defeated 6-4, 6-4 so missed out on any ranking points.
