Finals day for Bognor Lawn Tennis Club began with rain – but after a couple of hours of play the clouds cleared, treating spectators to a sunny afternoon of tennis.
Play began with Gaynor Woodward and Neil O’Boyle facing Sue Hodges and Dave Rowley in the draw for partners, while the ladies’ singles pitted Jenny Loversidge against Jean Mugleston. They threw up close contests that resulted in a 6-4, 6-4 win for Hodges and Rowley and a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory for Loversidge.
Rowley was quickly back on court with Sue Briggs to play Ruth Hendren and Paul Sabin in the veterans’ doubles. Hendren and Sabin were 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 winners.
In the men’s singles, there were tie-breaks in both sets as Oli Callingham and Dan Conway each won six games a set. The tie-breaks went 9-7 and 7-4 to Callingham, making this his third men’s singles title in a row.
Mugleston returned to the court alongside Maree Loversidge to face Carol Jones and Stella Smith in the ladies’ doubles. Both pairs played consistentlybut it ended 6-1, 6-3 to Mugleston and Loversidge.
In the mixed doubles, Louise and Rick West were up against Jenny Loversidge and Laszlo Sagi. The match could have gone either way but Loversidge and Sagi won 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
The men’s doubles was as equally exciting as the mixed contest. Conway returned with partner Tom Ford to face Robert Callingham and Dave Maskell. Conway and Ford took the first set 6-4; however Callingham and Maskell improved their game to win the next two 6-1, 6-4.
