St Gerards Boxing Club took 15-year-old prospect Shawn Thompson to fight in the Whitehawk Boxing Club dinner show in Brighton – and he did the business.
It was his third outing for the club and he weighed in at 58kg to face Lewis Whiting of Brighton & Hove Boxing club, also 58kg.
St Gerards coach Jon Mills said: “We already had a game plan in place for Shawn and it worked accordingly . He listens attentively.
“In the first round he boxed very much to plan with many straight punches hitting the target and with double jabs and straight right hands winning him the first round hands down against a very capable opponent.
“Then in the second he carried on as instructed, placing many more scoring blows on Lewis who was coming forward all the time and making a fight of it.
“Whiting caught Shawn with some telling shots to the body and head but Shawn just rubbed them off and carried on scoring the more telling scoring blows – although Whiting did catch him with some telling blows to both the head and body.
“In the third round I told Shawn to up the ante as Whiting would come gunning for him as he was so far behind. He reacted as expected, being the young pro that he is in our eyes, and gave a brilliant display of boxing at its best.
“He took the last round as well, although one of the judges begged to differ, making it a split difference in Shawn’s favour. So he picks up another win and looks forward to the junior championships in October – he is definitely one to be watched.
“He is such a pleasure to coach as he listens to all the instructions he’s given in the corner during competition and that allows him to persevere under adversity.”
The club are still hoping to hear from would-be sponsors who can aid their efforts to breat anti-social behaviour.
