Mix of fun and sport is netballers’ goal

Lavant House School’s head of PE Claire Cobden coaches the Chichester Junior Netball Club, who feature a number of the school’s players in their squad.

The club have entered two teams into the Portsmouth Junior Netball League this season and the under-14 team have kicked off their season strongly. But they are keen to attract new members.

The under-14s, captained by Sasha Arnell-Smith, train on Thursday evenings at Bishop Luffa’s sports hall and played their first competitive match against Squall.

Cobden said: “The team started well with some excellent shooting by Lauren Bolger and tight defence by Erin Sanford and Chloe Wildsmith. At half time it was 18-7 to Chichester.

“In the second half, Izzy Porter and Charlotte Dawtrey played well in the centre court and Sasha achieved a number of goals for the team. The final score was 38-17 to Chichester.”

The club meet each week and aim at girls from Year 3 through to sixth form. The first session runs from 5pm to 6pm and is run by Sarah Zanger; the second session, for girls in Year 7 to sixth form, train from 6.30pm to 8pm and are coached by Cobden.

Cobden is also captain of the adult Chichester netball team who play in the Portsmouth League on Tuesday evenings. They are currently doing well in the premier two division with six wins and six losses.
