Middleton Sports Club’s under-ten tennis team – Marcus Nelmes, Thomas Earle-Fairbairn, Robin Davey and Joshua Cornell – were crowned Aegon Sussex League champions for 2016.

They won matches against strong opposition from East Sussex tennis clubs including Hurstpierpoint, Henfield, Pavillion & Avenue and The Weald.

I was really pleased with the standard of play from all of the boys. They played well in difficult conditions against some good opponents, but deservedly won in the end.

Each boy played a singles match then joined with another team-mate to play a doubles match and there were some very close contests.

Marcus Nelmes remained unbeaten in both singles and doubles, dropping only three games throughout of his matches.

Team captain and manager Martin Nelmes said: ‘’I was really pleased with the standard of play from all of the boys. They played well in difficult conditions against some good opponents, but deservedly won in the end.”

It is the first time Middleton SC have won the under-ten league and bodes well for the future of tennis at the club.
