A NEW year of competition is upon Southbourne Gymnastics Club and they have a hard task ahead of them to try to beat last year’s amazing total of more than 200 medals.
Last year was hugely successful for the squad gymnasts as they took part in many competitions in Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and Kent. The Sussex championships saw many gymnasts winning medals and at a number of invitational competitions they won medals against strong competition.
A lot of the gymnasts were competing for the first time at a higher level than before, so new criteria were a challenge for the children – but they rose to the challenge, sweeping up awards and medals.
The club held their annual invitational competition in November where a record number of 215 gymnasts took part from Sussex, Hampshire and Kent.
The competition went smoothly with all participants going home with a gift and certificate.
The club believe every gymnast should have a reward for taking part, regardless of who wins medals – something that’s unique to Southbourne’s competition.
Following their medal-winning performance at the Sussex bronze level championships, some gymnasts took part in the regional competition in Kent.
Bea Hotchkiss, Becky Durham and Paige Hanson spent many hours preparing for the bronze level of competition after moving up from advanced the previous year. Following a netball injury days before the event, Paige was unable to take part but went along to support the other girls.
Becky gave great performances with new routines and finished second overall and Bea, despite a stumble in her floor routine, finished fifth.
This year’s competitions kick off with Sussex’s floor and vault championships on February 6. Gymnasts have new individual routines with new skills included.
Many have had to move up to the next level following high scores last year. They are putting in a lot of hard work in the gym and are enjoying the challenge of new criteria and learning new skills.
The club provide classes for all levels from new to gymnastics sessions to squad participation in Southbourne and Selsey and in many schools within the area.
