LOCAL hockey star Courtney Hansford has been playing for England’s under-16s in Germany.
She travelled to Hamburg with the squad to play a series of three matches - a fantastic end to her first year in the national squad.
They drew the first game 3-3 and lost two. Germany were a class act and Hansford will have learned a lot from playing in each game. She played well, but saw little of the ball because of a very organised German defence.
She did do an enourmous amount of running off the ball.
Hansford has played nine international matches in all and spent many weekends training at the National Sports Centre at Lillishall.
She and the rest of the under-16 squad also had a day’s training at Bisham Abbey with the full England ladies team, when she was paired up for the day with Alex Danson.
Hansford is training with the East Grinstead first team and hopes to be playing National League hockey this year.
Courtney said: “I had a great time in Germany playing for my country - it was an unforgettable experience. They looked after us so well and showed us how to play outstanding hockey.
“It was a shame we did not get a win, but we were proud to get a draw in one match as they had such a strong team. I have had a short break now and am looking forward to the new season.”
