St Gerards Boxing club travelled to Kent for an open boxing tournament hosted by Tenterden BC.
They were represented by up-and-coming Mwenya Chisanga, who weighed in at 64kg in the light-welterweight division for three two-minute rounds against Jaz Gaynor of Whitstable Boxing Club.
Gaynor had an impressive record and both boxers had been beaten by Harlem Eubank.
Coaches told Chisanga to get a fast start with his proficient jab.
Coach Jon Mills said: “He won the first round hands down with some cracking big rights and hooks and Jaz knew he was in for a hard night.
“In the second we told him to up the ante and use more combinations which he did to good effect, catching Jaz with some cracking body shots to both the left and right side of his body, also giving Jaz a bloody nose.
“But it wasn’t one-way traffic. Jaz was working hard to counter effectively but was missing his target, on many occasions trying to pin Mwenya down.
“In the third, we told Mwenya to keep the centre of the ring as Jaz had to come looking for him to try and win the contest. Jaz certainly did just that trying to chase Mwenya down. It was a pulsating climax to a very well-contested bout.”
Chisanga won on a majority split decision to the delight of the St Gerards team and the boxer’s family, who were in attendance.
Head coach Gareth Ferguson said: “He can have one more contest before the Haringey Box Cup in June at the Alexandra Palace in London where he enters as an elite novice with fewer than 10 contests, at 60kg in the lightweight division.”
