Bowls: Super Southbourne knock down Pavilion

Southbourne had a fine win at home to Worthing Pavilion A in West Sussex League division one.

On a rainy afternoon, Southbourne won on three rinks, lost on one and won by 27 shots to earn eight points. It left Southbourne third in the league with 44 points.

Southbourne lost at Norfolk in division one of the BM mixed triples league. Southbourne lost on both rinks and by 24 shots.

Southbourne lost in a close match at home to Tarring Priory A in West Sussex League division one. In a competitive match, each team won on two rinks and Southbourne lost overall by five shots to earn four points.

CHICHESTER

Now the final stages have been reached in each of the various disciplines in the Sussex County Bowling competitions, the Chichester Men’s section are delighted that a number of members have won through to the quarter-finals.

In the singles, Brian Butler and Simon Tooley have reached the last eight; in the triples it’s Kevin Ball, Simon Tooley and Mick Page and in the fours, Matt Bonnar, Derek Leach, Clive Keedwell and Mick Page.

It underlines the exceptional season Chichester are having at all levels of competition and beyond. In the national champion of champions Peter Whale and in the national senior pairs Derek Leach and Matt Bonnar continue to progress.

Chichester 44 Pulborough 43

In the first round of the Sussex double fours Abergavenny Cup competition, holders Chichester faced Pulborough.

With the away rink having drawn on a particularly-challenging green at Pulborough, the Chichester home rink secured victory after being five shots down going into the last end and picking up a six to win by one overall combined point.

In the second round, Chichester beat Crablands by three shots at home and three shots away.

In the first round of the National Double Rink Mixed Over-60s Tony Allcock Trophy, Chichester lost at home to Norfolk BC.

The PC Cup is played for by clubs in the West Sussex League and current holders Chichester had a magnificent first-round win by 67 shots against Worthing Pavilion, who conceded the match after 14 ends had been played on all four rinks.

In the second round Chichester will play Bognor or Maltravers.

Chichester B got off to a slow start against visitors Norfolk in their West Sussex League division-three match but they pulled away to triumph by 18 shots, securing all ten points

In difficult conditions on Aldingbourne’s artificial green, Chichester B produced an excellent result by taking eight points from a narrow two-shot win in their West Sussex division-three match.

Chichester beat Haslemere in the quarter-finals of the Midhurst Cup, winning all four triples (two home and two away) to take them into the semi-finals.

The annual contest between the Bowling Club and the City Club for the Alan Bowler Trophy saw City Club 14 shots ahead at halfway – but a late surge by the Bowling Club saw them retain the trophy.

Bognor Beavers 25 Chichester 26

Chichester travelled to Swansea Gardens for a mixed friendly against Bognor Beavers and in a very close game Chichester won by just one shot.

On a showery afternoon Chichester entertained Little Spain in a mixed friendly. The game was abandoned after 11 ends with Little Spain leading.

At home to Crablands in C&M League, Chichester ladies won on both rinks to take all six points.

Meanwhile Chris Hobbs, Margaret Schofield, Bridget Collins and Betty Spicer had a comfortable 26-9 win at home to Felbridge in the Gladys Rowland Trophy, taking them through to the fourth round.

Mary Potter, Denise Latter, Wendy Adams and April Janman had a good win at home against Crouch in the Gladys Rowland to take them to the fifth round.

Aldingbourne 21 Chichester 68

In the C&M League Chichester won on both rinks, taking all six points.

Chichester took three friendly rinks to Maltravers, where they had an overall win of 12 shots.

In the first round of the County Double Rink, Chichester played one rink home and one away against The Drive, winning on both rinks. They are away to Horsham in the next round.

Crablands were at home to Chichester in the BM League and gained two points to Chi’s four in a 35-33 loss.

Scores: J Tyrrell, J Taylor and J Cornwell beat Mary Potter, Guy Buckle & Peter White 21-11; P Osborn, C Cornwell and J Saunders lost 24-12 to Debbie Hogg, Terry Haigh & Mike Bayfield.

Crablands men played Aldingbourne in the Abergavenny Cup, one rink at home and one rink away.

Scores, home: C Pestle, J Cornwell, T Hanlon and D Clacey won 23-14; Away: A Bateman, A Blyth, D Adams and R Humphrey won 20-12.

Crablands ladies played Norfolk BC in the double rink, also one rink at home and one away. In atrocious weather conditions two ladies suffered falls and Norfolk conceded.

Crablands held their two-wood (yardstick) competition to leave finalists C Lewendon and V Foyle for the ladies and A Bateman and T Dade for the men. They’ll face each other on finals day.

Crablands’ ladies’ Top Club fixture versus Chichester will be played at Pagham on July 23.

Crablands travelled to Fishbourne in the BM League and picked up six points out of six.

In the C&M Ladies’ League, Crablands hosted Lancing in appalling weather and gained four points out of six. The game had to be abandoned after 18 ends.

The ladies’ Double Rink match against Worthing Pavilion saw Crablands go through to the next round. G Humphreys, M Bateman, S Blyth and C Ruler won 26-11 at home while C Lewendon, J Adams, S Jones and C Bowles lost away but only narrowly.

In the C&M Ladies’ League, Crablands hosted Arundel and won on both rinks gaining a welcome six points.

Witterings went to Fareham for a mixed friendly. They were unable to take sufficient players for the five rinks requested but with the assistance of the hosts it was possible to field two rinks and three triples.

Witterings won by 37 points and look forward to a return match on July 23.

In the ladies county double rink versus Aldingbourne, it was even between the home and away sides but Witterings won the deciding extra rink.

West Dean had a comfortable win against Pagham in West Dean Gardens.

This was the second leg in the match against Lavant for the Sid Hitchman Trophy.

Lavant were the winners by four shots, adding to the nine shots they were ahead after the indoor match to make them the winners of the trophy by 13 shots.

BOGNOR

Bognor ladies played Pagham in the first round of the county double rink and in a close game at home Bognor lost by one shot, but at Pagham they won by seven shots for an overall six-shot win.

They play Southwater in the next round.

In the PC Cup Bognor men faced Maltravers and won on two rinks and lost on two – but won 78-68 overall.

In the C&M League division three, Bognor men’s B team played Marine Gardens and came away with eight points. They won on three rinks and lost on one. The overall score was 81-66.

In division one of the West Sussex League, Bognor men’s A team played Norfolk A. They won on one rink and scored two points but lost 95-70.

On the same day Bognor ladies played Arundel in a C&M league division-one game. Bognor came away with four points with an overall win of 41-37.

Bognor ladies played Southwater in the County Double Rink. They won at home and away, 37-33 overall, and meet Crablands in the next round.

In the C&M League division one Bognor ladies beat Pagham on both rinks and won 62-29 to score six points.

Bognor played Crablands in the Midhurst Cup – winning on three rinks and overall 71-60

Bognor played RAFA in a mixed triples friendly, winning on three rinks and by 77-47.

A men’s league tussle with Worthing Pavilion A ended in a 97-59 defeat and three points for Pagham.

A ladies’ two-rink C&M League match versus Lancing ended in a 47-25 win and six points.

A ladies’ friendly triples match with Norfolk was lost 36-29.

Three very friendly mixed triples versus West Dean ended in a 73-33 loss.

The popular Pagham open tournament attracted 20 teams, who played competitive games over eight sets of seven ends. The team from Marine Gardens BC came through to win. Playing for Marine Gardens were Brian and Jan Hartley, Ivan Godsmark and Pauline Hughes.

Four mixed rinks travelled to the Island Bohemian Bowling Club – a tiny island set in the middle of the River Thames. It was a delightful spot on a sunny afternoon.

The island comprises a very smart bowling club and one residential home. A two-course meal, drinks and a trip around the island by boat ended what was a super day despite a 115-110 defeat.

Aldingbourne dropped ten points by losing on all four rinks in their league match at Middleton for a 99-50 defeat.

MIDDLETON

Middleton ladies successfully negotiated the preliminary round of the Kitty Hooson Memorial Cup, the Sussex inter-club double rink knockout competition, winning both games against Arundel. But they came unstuck in the next round, falling to Horsham.

PETWORTH

Petworth enjoyed the hospitality at Grasshoppers and managed to win on two rinks in a mixed triples friendly.

In the Men’s League, visitors Aldingbourne were not fazed by Petworth’s carpet as they have one of their own and took three rinks to Petworth’s one.

Arundel ladies Barbara Cairns, Terri Finch and Pat Vinten won the Pulborough ladies’ invatation triples.

The rain arrived just before the end but the trio enjoyed themselves and thanked organisers.
