Middleton and Pagham still have title hopes - but they're not favourites

The race for the division three west title goes to this Saturday's final day of the season – but Pagham and Middleton can only take the silverware by winning and hoping leaders Goring lose.

Goring moved back to top spot last weekend and are strong favourites to take the title and with it the single promotion berth.

Pagham kept themselves in contention by winning at Littlehampton.

They invited Littlehampton to bat on a wicket with one end affected by dampness.

Only Mike Askew (32) and Gareth Challen (33) came to terms with the conditions and disciplined bowling. Wayne Green was the pick of the bowlers, with his first five-wicket haul of the season for 33. Mike Hales claimed three for 46.

Pagham got off to a slow start because of tight bowling from Luke Vintner and were 56 for three after 22 overs.

Nathan Roberts decided attack was the best form of defence and smashed the bowlers to all parts. Roberts ended on 85 not out from 86 balls including four sixes. With Hales making a more sedate 15 not out, Pagham cruised to a six-wicket, 30-point win.

They need to win at Arundel on Saturday and hope Goring lose at home to Slinfold.

Middleton go to Steyning hoping for their result and the two others all to go their way.

* Pagham seconds started against Littlehampton II knowing a win would confirm them as league winners – and it didn't take them long.

Littlehampton batted first on a dampish wicket and were skittled out for only 27. Thomas Kent took five for ten, Nick Taberer three for

nought and Sam Dickens two for five.

Pagham had little trouble knocking off the required runs to get the 30 points and a well-deserved title. Congratulations are due after a great season-long team effort with the side well led by veteran Ian Dyer.
