Lock holds the key when it comes to teaching good sportsmanship

KATHI LOCK is one special teacher – and now she has found out just how highly she is regarded.

She thought it was just another assembly at Edward Bryant Primary School in Bognor, where she has worked for 16 years – until Sportsmanship First (SF) president Steve Crossley and the Observer burst into the school hall.

She then became the first teacher in the area to be presented with a Sportsmanship First award.

SF is fast-growing initative being rolled out across West Sussex schools aimed at teaching youngsters the importance of competing in the right spirit.

Through workshops and sports days, children are shown how much more enjoyment they get from sport if everyone shows a mutual respect for each other's efforts.

SF wanted to recognise the outstanding contribution Kathi Lock has made to her school and her tremendous support for Sportsmanship First.

Crossley said: "Kathi is inspirational. She develops a self-belief within any child, regardless of natural ability.

"These qualities are the mark of a great coach or teacher, but combined with her relentless dedication in ensuring the social well-being of children, Kathi is a shining example of humanity.

"Children at this school always go all-out to win but also to demonstrate fair play. These children put Sportsmanship First

as they have been guided to understand why this is important."

Headteacher Cathy Williams said: "Kathi mixes the qualities of a

competitive sportsperson with those of a sensitive teacher – developing a passion for sport not just with children who are naturally athletic but with those who sometimes lack confidence in PE.

"Kathi has introduced new sports into school to fire the interest of children so they get moving and take part. She is highly valued and respected by all her colleagues."

Kathi runs before and after-school clubs in fencing, street dance and other subjects.
