Nyetimber continued their 100 per cent record in the Invitation Cup group stages of the Chichester & West Sussex League by beating top team Wheatsheaf 3-2 at Avisford Park.
It was always going to be tight with both teams locked at the top. Wheatsheaf took the lead after an early mix-up in the Pirates defence. But new Pirates captain Michael Palmer headed home an equaliser soon after on his 49th appearance for the club.
Wheatsheaf struck again to take the lead early in the second half and it looked like they’d take the points until a late Mark Gill wonder header pulled it back to 2-2.
A new-look Pirates defence stood strong and denied Wheatsheaf’s attacks, with Stannard, Ludlow, Hunter and Bishop impressing. Pirates left it late but Mike Hamm’s goal took the spoils after a superb run from Phil Turner allowed him to play in his partner in crime for a simple tap-in in the dying moments.
Sub Jack Knight could have extended the lead but a superb save from the Wheatsheaf keeper denied the youngster.
PIRATES: Walter, Stannard, Ludlow, Hunter, Thomas, Williamson, Gill, Palmer, Hamm, Turner, Bishop. Subs: Knight, Welling.
