BEN DAVIES will feature for Pompey in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The former Derby and Sheffield United player has spent the week training with the Blues, impressing manager Paul Cook.

As a result, Pompey are weighing up a deal for the 34-year-old.

In the meantime, he will line-up against the Hawks at Westleigh Park (3pm) for Cook’s first game in charge.

Tom Craddock will also play, with the Blues potentially fielding up to four triallists in the fixture.

Cook is tight-lipped over revealing all their identities at present.

He would be someone that you would want to sign irrespective of seeing them play due to his versatility in different positions and how well he is spoken about in the game

But Davies, who can operate on the right-hand side of midfield or at right-back, is one who has definitely caught his eye.

‘I cannot really say who all the triallists are. Between now and Saturday a lot can change so it is pointless me saying Joe Bloggs is here or someone else,’ said Cook.

‘In fact, it would be disrespectful calling them triallists, one or two of them are very well-established players.

‘Ben is one of them and we will be looking at him against the Hawks.

‘He would be someone that you would want to sign irrespective of seeing them play due to his versatility in different positions and how well he is spoken about in the game.

‘If you get those two qualities within your game then you have a chance. He’s a good lad as well.

‘These are lads not on trial. It is whether we afford them, whether they fit into our budget, whether they fit into that we are trying to do – and that is a balancing act rather than a trial.’

Adam Barton (groin) and Adam McGurk (thigh) are set to miss the match as a precaution.
