Jack Whatmough is to step up his pursuit of a Pompey first-team spot with a loan spell at the Hawks.

The 19-year-old has not played since sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury on Blues duty against Cheltenham Town in March last year.

He returned to full training at the end of November, although has still to appear in any competitive match action.

In a bid to give Whatmough prized first-team minutes, Paul Cook has now allowed him to spend a month on loan at Westleigh Park.

He goes straight into the squad for the National League South club’s trip to Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.

Lee Bradbury’s side are second from bottom, albeit one point adrift from safety.

Whatmough has made 36 Pompey appearances since his debut in November 2013.
