Guy Whittingham believed Pompey deserved their progression into the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Yassin Moutaouakil netted the winning spot-kick against Torquay as the Blues won 5-3 on penalties.
An uninspiring match had earlier ended goalless, sending the first-round tie straight into a shootout.
And Whittingham insists the final result of a Pompey win was fully warranted.
He said: ‘You always want to win but to do it with a clean sheet is even better.
‘I thought we were the better side, created more chances and deserved the result – even if it ended goalless at the final whistle.
‘There were some good performances out there from the players and that was also encouraging.
‘It is something to build on as we go into the next game on Saturday.’
