BEN CHORLEY will captain Pompey this season.

The defender will lead the Blues assault on League Two in the new campaign.

A number of different players had the skipper’s armband at the end of last season.

The likes of Simon Ferry and Johnny Ertl took on the role, along with Chorley.

But Awford wants the 31-year-old to be his on-field general, with Ertl continuing as club captain.

He believes the former Arsenal trainee brings the kind of leadership qualities he is looking for.

‘Ben Chorley will be team captain this season and Johnny Ertl will be carrying on as club captain,’ said Awford.

‘Ben will be team captain if he’s in the starting XI.

‘If not and Johnny is, he will take it.

‘If not, I’ll ask someone to do the job for the day.

‘Ben is good around the place.

‘If he wasn’t good around the place he wouldn’t be captain.’

Awford explained the variety of captains last season was not a deliberate ploy or audition for the role on his part.

He said: ‘When none of them played, someone else was captain. That’s all it was.

‘There hasn’t been a change and there is no change in that respect.

‘I’ve just continued it from last season.

‘There was no need to rock that boat.

‘We are just getting on with it without making a mountain out of a mole hill.

‘It’s no different to last season.

‘Ben played the last two games and was captain.

‘There were only different captains when they didn’t play.’
