Stability has helped Gabor Gyepes rediscover his Pompey form.

That’s the verdict of Guy Whittingham, who is convinced the central defender is now back to his early-season levels.

The Hungarian faced an uncertain Blues future at the start of the year as he contemplated quitting the club.

The need for a long-term contract to enable him to move his family back over to England saw him considering leaving in January.

A move never materialised and instead Gyepes agreed on a month-to-month deal with Pompey.

Whittingham has revealed the experienced defender has also been given additional time off to see his family in Hungary.

And the caretaker Blues boss is delighted with the upturn in performances from the ex-Cardiff man since.

He said: ‘From Sam Sodje’s point of view, he has a battle to get into the side because the two centre-halves have done well.

‘I think Gabor is more settled and playing like the player he was at the beginning of the season.

‘In December and January he was missing his family dreadfully and there was talk whether he would leave or if he would stay.

‘For him, everything was up in the air. Now he is settled and you can see the difference.

‘We have given him a bit of time off so he can go back and see his family and he seems a bit happier for that.

‘You try to help them out the best way you can and he last saw his family a couple of weeks ago.

‘He seems a lot happier around the place and his performances are back up there as a result.

‘The players know we want them to stay here for the rest of the season and are settled.’
