Guy Whittingham believes Pompey’s wing versatility can be a crucial part of their League Two armoury.
The Blues boss employed both Ricky Holmes and Andy Barcham on the flanks in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
Regardless of the loss, the 312 travelling Pompey fans were encouraged by the display of both summer recruits.
Barcham netted his second goal of pre-season, while for Holmes it marked a first 90 minutes since an ankle injury while playing for Barnet in February.
The duo are both right-footed yet can also operate on the left flank – a fact which saw them often switch sides during the Cherries fixture.
And Whittingham is delighted with the tactical options they offer him.
He said: ‘Andy took his goal well, it was nice finish into the corner. A bit like myself – apart it was from 25 yards!
‘He has always got them in his game, that is why we were interested in bringing him here in the first place.
‘During the game we swapped the wingers just to mix it up a bit.
‘You don’t want defenders being comfortable and we are quite happy for them to express themselves.
‘If they end up on the other side then the other one comes across and makes sure we are organised defensively, that is what it is all about.
‘It was also good to see the pair of them play 90 minutes for the first time.’
