Micky Mellon assessed Connor Goldson’s winner and joked: He practises it all the time!

Goldson fortuitously got the decisive strike as Shrewsbury grabbed a 2-1 win over Pompey at Greenhous Meadow on Saturday.

Mellon felt he got the
luck for looking to put the ball in an area to hurt Pompey.

The Shrewsbury boss said: ‘Connor practises that all the time!

‘We said to put the ball into a dangerous area when we got the chance.

‘We said it needs to be put in with quality – we have to say that was quality!

‘Connor made it happen and the keeper wasn’t
quite good enough to keep it out.’

Mellon enjoyed the atmosphere served up by both sets of fans at Greenhous Meadow.

A crowd of 5,515 saw the clash with 835 Pompey supporters travelling to Shropshire from the south coast.

Mellon said: ‘The fans, home and away, were excellent.

‘There were two sets of fans who wanted to make themselves heard.’

Mellon was full of praise for Pompey’s performances and felt his team had toppled strong opposition.

He said: ‘It was a really good win against a good Portsmouth side.

‘They started well but dropped off and showed us respect.

‘They then gave us control of the game.

‘So we knew we had to do more with the ball when that happened.

‘I was delighted we
were able to do that in the end.’

Now it’s the small matter of Chelsea up next for the Shrews in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Mellon has been ignoring all the hype surrounding that game but knows his team can now look forward to the occasion.

He said: ‘Who’s next? Oh, it’s Chelsea!

‘We can put the league stuff to bed and enjoy the occasion.

‘The way we have played we deserve that occasion in front of the cameras.’
