ANDY AWFORD thanked Pompey fans for creating a Fratton Park wall of noise and vowed: That has to be the benchmark.

The Blues fans were at their raucous best as they roared their team on to a crucial survival win over Hartlepool on Saturday.

They responded to Awford’s call to deliver a cauldron atmosphere – and now the caretaker boss wants it to be kept up.

Awford said: ‘The fans were brilliant. I’m stood beside the pitch and you should hear the noise from there.

‘When the whole stadium gets that rhythm going it takes some beating.

‘I don’t know a ground in England which can create that atmosphere. It’s special.

‘So I thank the fans for what they have done on Saturday. They were impressive. The players were great as well, and when you put the two together you can’t beat it.

‘This is a very difficult place for teams to come when it’s like that.

‘That’s the way it has to be now over the final two games here.

‘I have to say our lads raised it and were up for it.

‘They went with that spirit and I was pleased with them for that.’

Meanwhile, Awford is hoping Dan Alfei isn’t missing for too long after being sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Patrick Agyemang was also missing on Saturday with an ankle problem.

Awford said: ‘Pat has done his ankle.

‘I don’t think Dan will be too long, but we need to be careful with it.’
