ANDY AWFORD revealed the belief is brimming in his upwardly-mobile side ahead of the trip to Cambridge.
Pompey go into tomorrow’s clash at the Abbey Stadium with confidence flowing after an upturn in results.
Eight points from 12 and four clean sheets on the bounce have injected some long-awaited impetus into the season.
Cambridge, in contrast, are winless in seven games going into the fixture.
Awford said: ‘We’re going into the game with confidence.
‘We’re getting confidence with the results and performances we’ve had of late.
‘There’s no need to talk about it really.
‘It’s there – and everyone can see that.
‘You always get a lift when you get a last-minute winner, too. The lads are confident and looking forward to it.
‘It makes it brighter. The week is always a lot brighter after a win.
‘Eight points from 12 is a good return – now we need 11 from 15.
‘The players go into the Cambridge game off the back of a good run and four clean sheets – that breeds confidence.’
The challenge for Pompey now is to put back-to-back wins together for the first time since August.
That would deliver another landmark in the search for consistency.
Awford added: ‘There’s been inconsistency.
‘But in the last eight games our performances have been very consistent.
‘Now, in the last four, we are getting consistent points.
‘Confidence and momentum are big and, the way we’ve played lately, there’s no reason why we can’t go into a game with confidence and get a result.’
