Pompey will stage a last-ditch attempt to resurrect Paul Benson’s loan move.
Swindon manager Paulo di Canio has recalled the striker from his two-month Fratton Park spell, despite the Blues’ eagerness to extend it.
Benson himself wants to stay on the south coast, having turned down a permanent switch to Bradford, with Cheltenham also interested.
However, with issues over the Blues’ contribution to the 33-year-old’s wages while on loan, Di Canio has ordered him back.
Guy Whittingham insists out of courtesy he will call his County Ground counterpart to thank him for loaning Benson.
But he will also be enquiring over the possibility of making it a third month on the south coast.
The caretaker boss said: ‘With Paul it is absolutely out of our hands.
‘I will give a call to Paolo out of respect for him and Swindon.
‘If a football club have got a loan player off me and want him longer I would want them to call me back.
‘I want him (Paul) back but because of financial reasons I can’t.
‘I just want to give Paolo a call out of courtesy and chat over the situation.
‘I’m not saying whether it is going to be positive for us or negative for us.
‘I just want to chat to him at the very least and say thanks for letting us have Paul because he has been a great asset for us.
‘I don’t know if we can get him longer until I have talked over the situation with him.
‘Paul has led the line for us well.’
