United’s Owen Callaghan shot over from the edge of the penalty area, before Chichester took the lead on 32 minutes when Josh Clack’s cross was met by Scott Jones.

Mavericks’ Adrian Todd shot a one-on-one opening wide and Fenelon had an effort well saved before Chi doubled their lead. United keeper Fraser Trigwell parried the ball out and Clack was on hand to drill the ball home from 12 yards.

Fenelon got a goal back with an excellent free kick on 60 minutes and Mavericks had opportunities to get level.

George Rudwick got through but shot over and Chi keeper Anthony Ender denied Fenelon and Matt Hards.

The visitors sealed the points late on when Punter was adjudged to have handled a cross and Ellis Martin scored from the spot.

City aim to make further FA Vase progress on Saturday.

Miles Rutherford will take his team to Ash United in the first round of a competition that ends in a Wembley final.

City have already earned £1,050 from coming through two Vase rounds and will net another £675 if they can overcome the Combined Counties division-one side, who are based in Aldershot.

It comes during a fine start to the season for Rutherford’s men, who have lost just once in the Southern Combinatiol League premier division and warmed up for the Vase tie with wins over Arundel and Worthing United.

City’s Vase campaign began at Whitstable where goals from Josh Clack and Jack Lee earned a replay with a 2-2 draw that included extra-time.

Scott Jones’ double and another Clack goal earned a 3-2 win in the Oaklands Park replay, and they had more home success in the competition when they saw off Sheppey 3-1 in the second qualifying round.

Jones scored another two and Clack got the other.

City are the only Observer-area team left in the contest.
