BOGNOR’s two-month unbeaten run in the Ryman premier was brought to an abrupt halt as two own goals and a red card made it a day to forget in north London.
The Rocks were already one down just after the hour mark when Craig Robson and Stuart Axten each put the ball past Mark Zawadski within two minutes to secure the win for the home team.
To compound the visitors’ misery, sub Dan Kempson was sent off and there was no way back into the game for Jamie Howell’s team.
With Doug Tuck still suspended, Scott Chamberlain came into central midfield for his first start since rejoining Bognor early in the season.
Conditions were very difficult for both sides, with a strong cross-wind which made good football tricky.
Chances were few and far between for both teams but there were early opportunities at either end.
In the third minute, a mistake by a Bognor defender nearly let in Wingate’s Rifat Ahmed but he shot across goal.
On six minutes a good cross by Arron Hopkinson was met by Ben Johnson but his first-time shot flew over the bar.
In the 31st minute, Wingate opened the scoring from a corner when Dean MASON’s shot from the edge of the box flew in through a crowd of players.
Two minutes later Johnson wanted a penalty for a challenge in the box but it wasn’t given.
Chamberlain shot wide in the 40th minute before a Hopkinson cross caused panic for Wingate.
Disaster struck for the Rocks on 63 minutes. A poor back pass by Robson and failure to clear by Zawadski saw the ball bobble in.
Two minutes later Axten headed a high ball back to the keeper but it sailed over him and in.
It was one of those day for Howell’s team and things went from bad to worse when a late tackle by sub Kempson resulted in a red card.
Dan Sackman replaced Johnson in the 75th minute and the ten men of Bognor tried valiantly to reduce the arrears.
Late on, Sackman and sub Ben Godfrey both had great chances but it just wasn’t to be.
