Midhurst move on up with another five-star show

A MONTH ago, Midhurst were bottom of Sussex League division two with just ten points. Now they are playing fluent football and scoring goals – and have moved up five places.

They have been named the division’s team of the month for February after winning all their games, most recently Saturday’s visit to Oakwood, which ended in a 5-2 win.

The hosts were shaken when Midhurst took the lead with a well-taken goal by Harry Menha after a perfect pass from Ian Saunders.

But a challenge in the box by Saunders was ruled a foul and Oakwood were awarded a penalty, only for Chris Hughes’ shot to go wide.

Goal machine Michael Asare beat home keeper Jess Grimstone to increase the Stags’ advantage although keeper Paul Williamson had to be alert to keep it intact.

Asare netted his second on 24 minutes before Midhurst had another strike scrubbed out for offside.

Seventy minutes had gone when Liam Dreckman made it 4-0 before Oakwood finally made their own breakthrough with Gueye Khadim beating Williamson.

Tom Haygate pulled back a second for them but Ben Crawford’s goal capped a fine day for Trevor Waller’s team, who look to continue the run at home to Southwick this Saturday (3pm).

MIDHURST: Williamson, Castleton, Dummer, Reilly, Crawford, Saunders, Pearce, Angell, Menha, Asare, Dreckman, Trinder.

* Barnham’s 0-0 draw at home to Ferring did little to enhance their promotion hopes, but they remain fifth – four points off second-placed Saltdean. Barnham host TD Shipley this week.
