After their recent run of good results, Midhurst went to Westfield confident of another Sussex League division-two win - only for them to come home empty-handed after a 1-0 defeat.
The first half didn’t find Midhurst at their best although the small band of travelling fans had their hopes raised on 15 minutes when Lawrence Hyde struck the bar with a shot.
Four successive corners for the home side put Midhurst under pressure and it wasn’t long before keeper Ian Knight was deemed to have fouled a Westfield player in the box. Gordon Cuddington converted the penalty.
Early in the second half a Midhurst corner led to a scramble which resulted in the woodwork being hit three times. Then Liam Dreckman was just too high with a shot.
Midhurst brought on three subs - Luke Sheldrick, Michael Asare and Ashley Holloway - and continued to play some enterprising football - but it was all to no avail as they couldn’t find the net.
MIDHURST: Knight, Dummer, White, Farr, Hyde, Dreckman, Hamilton, Newton, Wimble, Norgate, Dormer. Subs: Holloway, Asare, Sheldrick.
Midhurst host Saltdean this Saturday (2.30pm).
The club’s seconds lost 3-0 at home to Loxwood.
