Crows rule roost as Blues are bamboozled

Barney Covill tries to get Selsey moving against Crowborough

Barney Covill tries to get Selsey moving against Crowborough

Selsey’s recent poor run continued when they went down 3-0 at home to fellow Sussex League division-one strugglers Crowborough.

It was the visitors who went home the happier, although their jubilation was tempered by substitute Tom Pearson, having to St Richards Hospital to find out that he had broken his fibula in colliding with the pitch barrier.

The Blues have conceded 15 goals in their last four games and have not scored since Graham Bush’s strike at home to Sidley on November 10.

It didn’t look like Selsey would draw a blank when Ryan Morey was put through after three minutes, only to see his effort well-saved by Head. Shortly after that Rob Wimble’s effort was cleared.

Ross Woolf looked dangerous when he got to run at the defence and a series of corners followed.

Crowborough’s front men were starting to prove a handful and Ridley, playing off the forwards, was finding time to cause problems.

McEwan shot wide in the 23rd minute and then Biddlescombe should have done better.

In the 44th minute, a misplaced pass from Calum Britton went straight to Saunders, who moved the ball on to McEwan and he atoned for his earlier miss when he drove his shot past Sam Joyce.

Selsey looked to make amends in the second half, and Woolf, Wimble and Barney Covill might have scored. But good keeping and solid defensive work kept them at bay and an inability to score when playing well came back to hurt Selsey.

Pearson’s injury, in the 63rd minute, seemed to disrupt Selsey and galvanise the visitors. Two quick goals from Biddlescombe and Wood in the 81st and 83rd minutes killed the home side off - leaving them looking over their shoulders at the bottom three.

Selsey visit Redhill this Saturday.

SELSEY: Joyce, Britton, Hinshelwood, Williamson, Miller, Hegarty, R Morey (Parsons), A Morey (Frost), Wimble, Woolf, Covill. Sub not used: D Towers.
