Henderson: We only have ourselves to blame

Birmingham Nathan Redmond celebrates his late winner, much to the anger of Ricardo Rocha

Birmingham Nathan Redmond celebrates his late winner, much to the anger of Ricardo Rocha

Stephen Henderson felt Pompey had only themselves to blame for their late 1-0 defeat to Birmingham, despite a foul in the build-up to the winner.

The Blues goalkeeper, who was faultless all night in collecting crosses, insisted he was tripped by Birmingham striker Adam Rooney as the hosts won a corner moments before their goal.

Even then, though, Pompey had enough chances to clear their lines before substitute Nathan Redmond crashed home a cracking low volley.

Henderson said: ‘It’s very hard to take because it was late in the game.

‘We got done in the last five minutes and it’s not the first time it’s happened this season.

‘I’m not one to make excuses but their striker put his foot out and tripped me in the build-up to the goal. I watched it back on the video and it’s pretty obvious.

‘Sometimes you get them and sometimes you don’t but we had the chance to defend it after, so there are no excuses.

‘I was coming for crosses all night but I didn’t get that decision from the referee. That’s how it goes.

‘We might have nicked a 0-0 but it wasn’t to be. We didn’t test their goalkeeper anywhere near enough in the second half.’

Henderson also reiterated his desire to stay at Pompey.

He said: ‘I said from day one I needed the opportunity to play games and I’m grateful for that.

‘I heard a lot of stuff being said but I never wanted to leave. I love it here.’
