Top ECB coach set to give Middleton a boost

Rob Maier, a former South African schools under-19 cricketer and now an outstanding ECB level-three coach, has joined Middleton CC to work principally with the club’s senior sides.

Maier has worked with Middlesex CCC since 2004, coaching a range of junior squads up to and including their emerging player programme. He is currently under-15 head coach at Harrow School and head coach of Ealing CC’s academy.

Ealing are probably the strongest side in the Middlesex Premier League and are Twenty20 club champions of England.

Maier has current roles at Buckinghamshire CCC, including head coach of their emerging players programme.

Middleton’s new cricket chairman Matthew Hansford said: “We’re determined to give our players the best possible facilities and coaches to improve their cricket.

“We already have one of the best grounds in Sussex, a fantastic coach, Brian Towner, running our colts section and, with Rob, we now have one of the top coaches in the south, working closely with our first and second XIs.

“Middleton are very fortunate to have attracted a coach with Rob’s standing and with him involved we intend to develop the club into one of the leading clubs in Sussex once more.”

Middleton started their indoor net sessions on Tuesday last week at Arundel Castle’s indoor school. The nets will run for eight weeks from 7pm to 8.30pm on Tuesdays.

The club run two Saturday sides as well as a Sunday friendly team and would like to hear from any players interested in joining the club.
