Top-of-the-table Pagham elected to field in their Sussex division-three clash at Stirlands – and had success in the third over with Nick Hunt edging Nabid Rehman to the keeper with only three on the board.
If Pagham thought this heralded an easy afternoon they were wrong as below-par bowling and fielding saw Stirlands make a game of it, ending on 195 for eight.
Stuart Hanks (34), Will Gubbins (48) and Dan Mugford (48no) all made good contributions. Justin Scott starred with the ball finishing with four for 55 in 17 overs.
In reply Pagham lost Staurt Rutter for 11 but Scott followed up his good bowling with a belligerent 52.
With the score on 78, Pagham lost two wickets and the game looked in the balance – but Nilushan Nonis followed up his two hundreds with a quick-fire 71 not out and was well supported by Mike Hales with 34 not out.
They saw Pagham to a well-earned seven-wicket victory and edges them even closer to promotion.
