Midhurst and Sidlesham were both back in home action as the better weather continued - but both enjoyed little to cheer about.

Midhurst 1 AFC Uckfield 2

Sussex League division two

This match was close - but not close enough to earn a point for struggling Midhurst.

Uckfield were sharper than Midhurst in most areas.

The first half-hour was evenly contested and Midhurst seemed the most likely to score. However, with half-time approaching, Howard Davis evaded a Midhurst defender and Uckfield were ahead.

This spurred them on and Callum Leggott found it easy to score number two.

After half-time, Midhurst found some extra enthusiasm and the good-sized band of supporters thought a two-goal deficit might be possible to claw back.

Midhurst’s George Day made way for Mark Pelling while Sean Dummer replaced Tom Merritt-Smith.

Spirits rose when Luke Sheldrick scored a well-taken goal in the last five minutes. Several goalbound shots were fended away by the Uckfield keeper.

Midhurst do not have a very good record for discipline and Pelling was red-carded for kicking out at an Uckfield defender.

On Saturday, Midhurst visit Rustington (2pm) needing to find some points soon.

MIDHURST: Knight, Merritt-Smith, White, Broughton, Norgate, Hyde, Turner, Peck, Sheldrick, Day, Casselton, Pelling, Stevens, Dummer.

The seconds are at home to Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

Sidlesham 0 Uckfield 0

Sussex League division three

A BATTLE between two teams on good unbeaten runs ended in the almost-inevitable draw.

The Sids had most of the early play but the Uckfield defence were snuffing out most of the attacks.

Midway through the half Dan Bassil was through on goal but the keeper got a hand to his shot, pushing it just round the post.

Uckfield were not posing a great threat, only occasionally getting through the Sids defence. In one attack a forward got into the box but blasted the ball over the bar.

The Sids nearly made the breakthrough when a John Phillips header went just the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw Uckfield get more into the game, putting the Sids defence under pressure, and on 75 minutes Paul Grantham was judged to have fouled an Uckfield forward for a penalty. But the spot kick clipped the outside of the upright.

Sids brought on Tom Kelly and Joe Newton but the match finished as a draw.

This was the Sids’ third draw on the roll and the Sids dropped a place - but with the top six separated by seven points, promotion is in their own hands.

SIDS: Rochester, Low, Carrigher, Hounsome, Robinson, Grantham, Millens, McCoy, Bassil, Phillips, Jefkins. Subs: Williams, Kelly, Cowell, Newton, Smith.

Sids are away to Roffey this Saturday.
