He is one of seven players who have retained their places from last year’s Sussex academy intake. Joe Billings, Tom Gordon, Tom Haines, Nick Oxley, Ben Twine and Harrison Ward are the others, and all are under the tutelage of new academy director Carl Hopkinson.

All have shown in the past year they can put in high-level performances as well as absorb new information and alter their techniques.

“We’re excited by the group we have together.”

Smith has played for Eastergate for several years and chairman Steve Grant said: “Nick had a fabulous 2016 season for Eastergate first XI with 27 wickets and more than 500 runs in division one of West Sussex Invitation League.

“This capped a very successful association with the club – he is moving on to the County League for 2017 – where he represented every age group and scored hundreds in every age group from 11 through to this year.
