MORE than 8,000 tonnes of shingle is being brought to Adur's coastline as part of flood defence maintenance.
Excavators and diggers will be busy on the beaches of Lancing and Shoreham during the next four weeks while work is carried out.
The Environment Agency is responsible for maintaining the district's sea defences, which stretch for some two miles and defend more than 1,300 homes.
During the last three years, the width of the shingle crest on Adur's beaches has naturally reduced, owing to weather and waves.
Work to reprofile the beach crest and slope began on Monday, September 29, and will take about a month to complete, at a cost of £115,000.
Environment Agency area flood risk manager Andrew Gilham said: "Storms, high winds and severe weather conditions can test our defences at any time of the year.
"This routine maintenance work will ensure the defences are at the required standard ahead of any autumn and winter storms.
"Since 2000, we have spent £18million on improving the sea defences between Shoreham and Lancing.
"We are already working with local communities who live along this coastline to develop a long- term plan for managing flood and erosion risk for the next 100 years."
