AN electronics company which prides itself on "rescuing" customers in an emergency, has donated £3,500 to the appeal for a new lifeboat station in Shoreham.
Spirit Circuits, which manufactures circuit boards for all manner of electronic equipment, has pledged to support the Shoreham Lifeboat Station Appeal, to help towards the cost of a new lifeboat and lifeboat station.
The company, based in Hampshire, produces Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) which lie at the heart of items like computers, games consoles, cameras and other hi-tech gadgets and cameras.
Steve Driver, managing director of Spirit Circuits, presented a cheque for £3,507 to the volunteer lifeboat crew at Shoreham Lifeboat Station.
He said: "I'm a huge admirer of the RNLI.
"I race in powerboats myself so I am well aware of the vital service that the brave volunteer crew members provide.
"Apart from that, in a business sense, I appreciate the importance of being there to 'rescue' people when they need a helping hand.
"The work of the RNLI is a lot more life and death than ours, but we like to think the principle is the same."
ActivitiesAn RNLI fun day held at the Waterside Inn, on Shoreham Beach, raised more than £500 for the Shoreham Lifeboat Station Appeal.
This is the second year that licensees Dean and Julie Layton have organised the fund-raising afternoon and the combined raffle, auction, hog roast, table top sales and collection raised a total of £512 towards the appeal.
This year's activities also included the popular "get yer kit on" competition, where staff and patrons race against the clock to fully dress in offshore lifeboat gear before being "tested" as to whether or not it is on properly and waterproof.
Shoreham's inshore lifeboat crew visited the event and gave a display of their boat's speed and agility to customers gathered on the riverbank.
Following a visit ashore they then gave a narrated demonstration of some of their specialist life-saving techniques, including the recovery from the sea of casualties suffering spinal injuries.
The £1million lifeboat appeal has reached £128,317.93.
The following donations have been received: Anonymous donations amounting to £835; Auction following the closure of the Warren Club, £225; Mr G. Scriven in lieu of birthday presents for Joyce Wheadon, £40; In memory of Hazel Byrne, £20; 2nd Kingston Buci Brownies spring fayre, £130; Sussex Yacht Club Royal Escape Race, £820; Ardingly VCV bucket collections, £171.60.
