The procedure to choose the operator began in October 2007 – 21 companies were interested.
Eight firm expressions of interest were received. Of these, seven were selected.

Four of them led to detailed proposals. A five-strong selection panel decided to go forward with three of the schemes.

One dropped out to leave Openwide and the
current theatre's operator, Arun Arts, competing head-on for the future contract.

Openwide was deemed the better-quality company with higher-quality proposals, and its ideas were judged to be more commercial and sustainable.

The final decision was made unanimously by the panel.
