Well-known club will be re-opening

TRUSTEES are hard at work reviving a well-loved youth club in Bognor Regis.

The group of volunteers are busy putting the finishing touches to the new 39 Youth Club.

They hope to re-open the facility, which has been closed for a while, within two months.

Vicky Hennessy, the chairman of trustees, said the club would be based in the annex of the 39 Neighbourhood Youth Centre off Glamis Street.

“We are waiting to sort out the lease with the county council but we will be up and running by Christmas.

“It will be a youth club where young people from Year 6 upwards, aged 10/11, will be able to come in when they want after school.

“There is nowhere in Bognor to go to at that time if they do not want to go to McDonald’s.

“They can’t necessarily go home because their parents aren’t there.

“The Roman Catholic church has found young people sitting round the back or on the seafront or they are just hanging around.

“That’s when you start getting problems.”

Mrs Hennessy said the 39 Youth Club would offer a positive alternative. It would boast a pool table and two table tennis tables, as well as a tuck shop.

It would be independent of any other youth service in the town and would not be offering advice.

“We will point the young people in the right direction if they want any help but the purpose of our club will not be to provide any advice sessions,” she said.

Funding has been secured for the next two years. Grants will be sought to continue after that and income is expected from hiring out the annex.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust had also joined with the trustees to use the annex, as well as the lodge in the neighbouring park.

The 39 Club is more than 50 years old but Mrs Hennessy said records of its popular past were scarce. She would welcome any information on 01243 864124.
