A spokesperson for Arun District Council also debunked rumours that the barrier into the car park in Banjo Road was left open – and said the lock was cut by ‘unknown persons’.

They said: “A group of between 20 to 25 travellers arrived overnight at the Banjo Road Car Park on Littlehampton seafront on Tuesday, November 22.

“The travellers left the site on Sunday, 27 November after being served with a legal document by West Sussex County Council ordering them to leave. The council has sent a cleansing team to remove all rubbish from the site.

“It has come to the council’s attention that some social media sites reported that Arun had left the barrier open and travellers were able to gain easy access to the car park.

“The council would like to confirm that this was not the case, the height barrier was in place and locked on the evening the travellers arrived but the lock was cut or broken by unknown persons.”
