Man arrested on suspicion of rape at St Richard’s Hospital

A 29-year-old man from Chichester has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an incident at St Richard’s Hospital.

The incident took place overnight between Wednesday, January 9, and Thursday, January 10.

Police received a report from the hospital at 1:45pm on Thursday that a female patient in her 20s had made an allegation to hospital staff of rape by a male healthcare worker at the hospital overnight.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Wardley-Wilkins from the West Sussex CID said: “We are in the early stages of a full investigation.

“Officers are continuing their enquiries and are receiving full cooperation from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust.

“The victim is receiving help and support from specially trained police officers.”

The suspect was arrested at around 9pm on Thursday evening and remains in custody where he is being interviewed.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “A full investigation to clarify the circumstances is ongoing and we cannot release more details at this time.

“Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Jura.”
