EIGHT fire engines have been called to tackle a fire at a North Bersted garage.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to battle the flames which started in car garage on Chalcraft Lane.
The alarm was raised today (Tuesday, August 13) at 11.52am.
Four pumps originally attended the blaze, but that number was quickly doubled.
The garage, believed to be DT Autos, is close to the traffic lights at the entrance of Central Avenue.
Firefighters are working to douse the ten meter by 30 meter structure.
A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters are also fighting flames in the attached bungalow.
The spokeswoman added a number of cylinders were involved in the blaze, at least one of which has exploded.
Rob Power, who was in Newton Avenue, described the noise as a rocket taking off, followed by a lot of black smoke.
Large flumes of black smoke billowing from the site can be seen in the area and police have closed part of Chalcraft Lane and surrounding roads for drivers safety.
A nearby residential care home has also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
