Team getting set for hottest challenge yet

A TEAM of Bognor Regis runners is cranking up the heat as its ultimate challenge looms nearer.

The Bognor Dune Runners is a team of five like-minded challenge seekers from Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners.

They formed in 2012 and share the same long term goal to complete what is regarded as the ultimate challenge, the Marathon des Sables – a 155 mile footrace through the Sahara Desert in 50 degree heat.

They will take on their challenge in April, 2015, in aid of Chestnut Tree House.

The team includes Colin Hiscock, Ian Bayley, Luke Simmonds, Gary Pidgeon and Chris Gallagher.

They said: “What lies ahead of us is incredibly daunting.

“We will be running around 150 miles over six days. This is basically the equivalent of running from London to Dover, changing your mind about going to France and then running back to London again.

“All in 120 degree heat and carrying a back pack. Not to mention the voices in our heads endlessly dreaming about cold beer.”

Last month the team started their heat training, a vital part of their plan to be ready for the temperatures that face them across the Sahara Desert.

Chichester University has supplied a fantastic facility that allows them to do this and is supporting the team’s progress throughout this stage.

In addition to the heat stage of their training, the team is also taking part in various races in London and across the south including, the Brighton Marathon, London Marathon and the Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run in September.

Throughout this year, the runners will be holding various fundraising events, encouraging everyone to support them in whatever way they can.

Their first was held last Friday at Bognor Regis Town Football Club and was a
party night featuring compere, comedian Ben Bulbeck.

The evening included a raffle, charity auction and music by After Dark Disco.

They will also be holding a number of collections at the town’s Morrisons throughout the summer, a street collection at the cross in Chichester on June 28 and a day-long fête and family fun day at West Park, in Aldwick on July 19.
