STORMY seas have claimed seats on the beach in Pagham.
The ferocious storms last weekend sent waves crashing on to the benches in front of the yacht club.
The force of the waves tore up the concrete base on which the front row of three of the six seats were embedded. Also at the site is a D-Day memorial.
Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said: “That site is a strategic flood risk assessment breach zone. On Saturday, it was the overtopping of the waves which went over the beach crest with the seats and down the slope into the road.
“But we would be in serious problems if the sea did breach there.”
A 2008 report said that would put 347 homes at risk.
Cllr Radmall said the strong winds and high tides caused more erosion to the beach further along West Front Road.
He estimated ten to 12 homes were at risk as the beach crest was narrowed to some 4.5m. A further 15 were in some danger.
n Tomorrow’s meeting of Bognor Regis Civic Society will focus on Pagham Beach.
It will take place at 7.30pm in the Regis Centre in Bognor.
