STUART McGINLEY: The Local Hero Awards are a very special event

I've had another busy week as Spirit FM prepares for its 10th Local Hero Awards.

The judging this year was the hardest it has ever been. With more nominations than ever before, the task of picking our winners was an onerous one; the stories of kindness, bravery, achievement and sacrifice were as inspirational as they were humbling.

I’m looking forward to co-hosting the event again this year with my Spirit FM colleague Kate Goddard, we’ll both be rehearsing tomorrow and probably in our sleep tonight. James Morrison is our special musical guest this year and I know that Kate is especially looking forward to meeting him, although I am not sure if he feels quite the same though!

Our chosen charity on the night is the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, who do a fantastic job at supporting very poorly and terminally ill children in West Sussex. They are a very unique local charity who provide ‘Nursing Care at Home’ when a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening or terminal illness.

As a parent, The Sussex Snowdrop Trust is one charity that you hope you will never need.

However, should you be in the terrible position to be given the news that any parent dreads, you will be eternally grateful for the nursing, financial and emotional support they provide on a daily basis.

The main focus of The Sussex Snowdrop Trust is to enable very poorly local children to be in their own homes with their family and familiar surroundings at a time when they so desperately need to be.

The Sussex Snowdrop Trust receives no funding and only continues to provide this much needed service thanks to the generosity of local people and I am delighted we are supporting such a great cause at our Local Hero Awards 2016.

I’d like to thank you if you took the time to nominate someone for an award, we will have full updates on the night on our website and social media pages throughout the evening and I will also be presenting a special highlights programme this Sunday at 1pm on Spirit FM. It’s always an emotional listen, so have the tissues ready! #LHA2016
